WHO ARE WE?

We are an investment firm committed to providing sophisticated clients with access to global investment opportunities in public and private companies, startups, real estate and alternate assets. We believe in our convictions and we make substantial investments alongside our clients. We follow the principles of the original Warren Buffett partnership and do not charge management fees. Our performance fees are charged beyond a hurdle rate of 5% per annum. We forge strong partnerships with our clients and offer them honest counsel. Our talented team and network are highly experienced and forward-thinking, investing with focused expertise in a wide range of asset classes across the globe.
OUR NAME
The 1892 book, the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a collection of short stories. One of the stories is “Silver Blaze,” a mystery about the disappearance of a famous racehorse the night before a race. Sherlock Holmes solves the mystery in part by recognizing during the investigation that the dog did nothing during the fateful night. He called it the “curious incident of the dog”. Holmes drew a conclusion from a fact that did not occur, which can be referred to as a “negative fact,” or for the purpose of this discussion, an expected fact absent from the record. Our investment philosophy and thesis is based partly on the fact that it is not that difficult in many investment circumstances to recognize that you expect certain facts will be demonstrated — like the barking of a watchdog during the commission of a crime — and thus the absence of those expected facts can have meaning.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Like the famous detective mentioned above, our team focuses on identifying patterns, trends using macro and micro economic analysis, statistics and data mining. We also pay particular attention to absence of data and other cues. We actively scout for opportunities in public, private and venture markets, real estate and alternate assets. For identifying these opportunities we work with stakeholders, consumers and regulators to validate or disprove our thesis. We are not afraid to hold on to extraordinary amounts of cash / money market instruments and wait for extraordinary times and disconnects in the market before we make large and concentrated investments.
